Man vs. Wild star Bear Grylls has revealed it was a ‘privilege’ to feed Prince George his very first live ant when the two were introduced by the young royal’s granny, Carole Middleton, a couple of years back.
The British adventurer met the future heir to the British throne, now eight, when he was just six, after he was asked by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to skipper a yacht during the King’s Cup regatta in August 2019.
However, the 47-year-old said it was Kate’s mum Carole who instigated the meeting, confessing the little one loved his interactive Netflix series, You vs. Wild.
Bear explained that George stared at him with “amazing wide eyes” after he quizzed him on whether he’d ever dined on an insect, and called the youngster a “hero” for “facing his fears”.
When questioned about feeding the mini royal his first ant on Good Morning Britain yesterday, the Chief Scout admitted: “I didn’t really mean to”.
“We were doing something for Prince William’s Kings Cup event. We were down and the royal family were there, and it was the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother who said, ‘Will you come and say hello to George? He’s a big fan of your Netflix interactive show’”.
“We were chatting, and just as we were chatting a stream of ants went across his feet and we looked at them. He looked at me with those amazing wide eyes and I said, ‘Come on’, and he said, ‘Really?’”
In the past, the daredevil has suggested ants as a decent food source in survival environments.
“We ate, and it was a privilege to give the future king his first ant”, Bear added proudly. “His eyes lit up as they do with anyone when they’re out in the wild and face a few fears and overcome them. Good for him, what a hero”.
Bear also described the royal meeting in his new autobiography, Never Give Up, revealing that George had displayed a look of “trepidation and excitement” when he noticed a line of ants parading by.
“I knew that look well. I smiled at him and said, ‘Have you ever eaten an ant?’ He shook his head nervously. ‘You want to? Just you and me?’
“He looked around, then back at me, and nodded. I grabbed one ant for him and got him to hold it between his fingers, then got one for myself. ‘One, two, three, and in it goes… ready?’
“He looked more nervous now. I smiled reassuringly. ‘It’ll be fine. We can do this… OK? One, two, three, here we go!’ I will never tire of that wonderful grimace on people’s faces as they eat something from the survivor menu for the first time.
“Whoever they are, it’s always priceless. But I don’t think I will ever see wider eyes than Prince George’s, nor a broader grin. It was a fun moment that I hope, when he is king one day and I am an old man, he might still remember. After all, who can ever forget eating their first ant?’”
