Ben Shephard opened up on Good Morning Britain telling viewers he’d “been in tears”.
Kate Garraway, 54, and Ben, 46, had tuned in to watch sailors Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell win the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in the Men’s 49er.
Having watched the duo marginally scoop up the win, Ben explained that his emotions ran high.
He said: “I’ve already been in tears this morning.”
An unsympathetic Kate joked: “And for once it wasn’t my fault.”
The Tipping Point host explained that the team GB sailing duo took home the gold by just “centimetres” as he shared just how close their win had been.
Speaking to Sally Gunnell in an interview via zoom, he said: “Sally, it’s lovely to see you this morning, thanks so much for joining us.
“I mean we continue to be blown away by the endeavours and the achievements by Team GB and out Olympians.
“I sort of need to rehydrate because I’m crying so much.”
Later on in the programme Ben explained that his “nerves” had been “shredded” by the intense heats.
He “couldn’t cope” with the excitement as he explained the momentous occasion as “an extraordinary moment for sailors”.
Meanwhile, yesterday on GMB Kate opened up about husband Derek Draper’s recovery process.
Speaking to Dr Amir Khan on the breakfast programme, the TV star explained that “more issues” had emerged for Derek who continues to battle Long Covid.
Dr Amir Khan added: “Lots of people are suffering from long Covid.
“Symptoms can include extreme fatigue, brain fog, problems with vision, problems with pain, difficulty breathing, palpations, chest pain – all sorts of things.”
Kate said: “That’s only the ones we know as well. That’s the thing, more and more are emerging as different parts of the body are damaged.
“I know Derek is an extreme example of, all the time there are more issues. Initially, it was a bit of exhaustion and now it seems to be more of them presenting.”
Kate’s husband was placed into an induced coma after he contracted the life-threatening virus.
After being hospitalised for over year, Derek was finally allowed to return home to his family.
