Bradley Walsh stunned as Johnny Vegas reveals surprising career before comedy

Johnny Vegas had Bradley Walsh scratching his head on The Chase when he shared his rather surprising career path before comedy.

The 50-year-old actor and comedian is famous for being the funny man on TV, and many will fondly remember him as the face of the comical PG Tips adverts.

However, it turns out the star had a dramatically different career before he entered the world of showbiz – and one that required the comic to be rather serious.

Johnny had appeared on a celebrity special of ITV’s The Chase alongside Jacqui Oatley, Dev Griffin and Falolon Sherrock, which aired in October last year.

The celebrity team were on the famous quiz show to put their knowledge to the test in order to try and bag a hefty cash prize for the charity of their choice.

It was soon Johnny’s turn to step up to the plate and face off against Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett.

When the comedian walked up to the podium, the conversation topic turned to jobs and he had host Bradley Walsh baffled after admitting he used to have a very different career path before comedy.

Chatting to his guest, Bradley said: “Comedian, actor, writer, I mean you’ve done so much now.”

Bradley asked Johnny: “Did you always want to be a comic?”

Johnny replied: “Not really,” before Bradley wondered: “What did you want to do?”

Opening up about his early years, Johnny explained: “Well, priesthood, potter, I studied ceramics and sort of drifted into comedy working behind bars.”

An excitable Bradley, who couldn’t believe what he’d just heard, said: “Seriously, the priesthood. Seriously?”

Johnny confirmed it, prompting Bradley to say: “Wow!”.

Sadly for Johnny and his teammates, though, they didn’t have much success in the game at all.

Despite all four of the celebrities managing to get through the first round with a whopping total of £64,000 they only proceeded to answer 14 questions correctly between all of them in the Final Chase.

It was easy work for The Beast and he quickly beat the stars – answering all of his questions correctly before the 60 seconds was up.

Bradley then said: “We just didn’t quite perform in that round.

“Alright look, it’s the way it goes – I’ve got to take the £56,000 away, and tell you I am sorry, but Johnny, Fallon, Dev, Jacqui finally, you have been caught and for you the chase is over.”

The Chase airs on ITV weekdays at 5pm.
