Britney Spears’ father Jamie has been suspended as the conservator of her estate after 13 years.
During the latest court hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Judge Brenda Penny said Jamie Spears remaining in charge of his daughter’s estate was “untenable” and “reflects a toxic environment”.
The 69-year-old was ordered to turn over the relevant documents to John Zabel, a certified public accountant, who has been appointed temporary conservator of the singer’s estate.
Jamie’s legal team argued against the suspension, claiming that the termination of the conservatorship was the better course.
Jamie had also argued that John was not qualified to oversee the singer’s $59m (£46m) fortune.
However, the judge sided with Britney’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, agreeing it was in the star’s “best interests” that her father be removed.
The singer’s lawyers also requested that a new hearing be held in the next 30 to 45 days to decide whether to end Spears’ conservatorship altogether.
The decision comes as a huge victory for the pop singer, who has spoken out about her father’s control during dramatic court hearings in June and July, claiming she had been medicated against her will and denied the right to have children.
Fans around the world have supported her through the #FreeBritney campaign.
Ahead of the hearing on Wednesday, fans held a rally outside the court where they sang her classic “Hit Me Baby One More Time”.
Fans in London’s Trafalgar Square also held a Free Britney rally on Wednesday.
Britney’s new fiancé Sam Asghari took to his Instagram Stories to celebrate the news and make his feelings known.
The 27-year-old actor penned: “FREE BRITNEY! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!”
Jamie has been in charge of his daughter’s estate and finances since 2008.
He already stepped down as conservator of her personal affairs in 2019 for health reasons.
In a surprising move earlier this month, he announced he would be stepping down as conservator and that he was seeking the conservatorship be terminated.
