Carol Kirkwood said she would hang on to BBC Breakfast role 'by her fingernails'

Carol Kirkwood has been a weather reporter on BBC Breakfast for over two decades, and is a much-loved and cemented member of the team.

The 58-year-old has made her love of her role on the morning news programme no secret, and she regularly shares in-jokes with her fellow colleagues Dan Walker, Louise Minchin and Naga Munchetty during her weather reports.

But after a substantial amount of time in her stalwart role on the channel, Carol has faced fears of eventually being replaced.

It turns out the star once vowed she would fight back at the prospect of being “shown the door” by the show.

And when the addition of Owain Wyn Evans to the weather reporting team earlier this month saw viewers showering him with compliments, hopefully that won’t actually be the case.

In an interview with Radio Times back in 2018, Carol insisted she would “never give up the weather” on BBC Breakfast and said she would “fight for her job”.

“If they showed me the door I would hang on by my fingernails,” the Scottish meteorologist continued.

Carol concluded that she would be there “as long as Breakfast wants me,” because she “loves” it.

Fans enjoying Owain’s performance this month flocked to Twitter to praise the reports, as one person wrote: “Loving the new happy, happy weatherman.”

“Morning Owain, a breath of fresh… air having you on the box and in the studio this morning – love the delivery and presentation,” another said, followed by some calling for him to report more often.

This morning saw presenter Dan Walker joke about a blunder his BBC boss made yesterday when he told viewers they could expect to see Carol today.

But in doing so, the team only confirmed how much they adore and respect Carol at the BBC studio.

“If viewers were watching last night they would have seen our boss say that he was looking forward to the return of BBC Breakfast today,” Dan explained. “He mentioned that Louise and I were sat on the sofa and he said the weather would be with Carol.”

Teasing today’s reporter Matt Taylor, Dan asked: “Were you not tempted to dig out the blonde wig this morning at some point?”

“I couldn’t find the blonde wig at all,” Matt laughed. “And to be fair let’s be honest, I couldn’t do it justice. There’s only one queen of weather isn’t there really?”

“Well I’m not going to argue with you on that,” Dan agreed with a grin. “But you can be the king of weather Matt.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
