Casualty fans were delighted on Saturday night as Iain Dean, played by Michael Stevenson, made a long-awaited return to the show.
Iain’s return was also a pleasant surprise for his old pal Jan (Di Botcher) too. However, things got awkward very quickly when Iain caught Jan shoving drugs under a prison mattress.
On Saturday’s episode, Jan had been coerced by her son Ross to supply drugs into prison where he is currently an inmate.
Previously, Jan had already received a nasty warning about the drug supplies potentially drying up, and was attacked in a car park along with her wife Ffion who was left unconscious on the ground.
Ffion was convinced that the incident was a hate crime, but Jan knew the truth and is startled to learn that this might be just the beginning of a long vicious cycle.
Jan managed to escape with only a few broken bones but understood that worse could potentially happen next time if the drug supplies in the prison were to go low again.
While Jan was doing a drug stop at the prison, she was spotted by Iain who was also on call to the prison as part of the HEMS team.
Iain was surprised to see Jan delivering drugs illegally to the prison, but will he keep Jan’s drug trafficking a secret or will he decide to let the cat out of the bag?
Despite all the drama going on in the show, viewers were pleased to see the return of the much-loved character and took to Twitter to express their joy.
One fan wrote: “It’s so good to have Iain back in.”
Another Casualty fan said: “Welcome back Iain Dean we missed you.”
While a third quipped: “I’m so happy Iain’s back! And I absolutely cannot wait to see where this storyline goes.”
Michael Stevenson who plays Iain Dean in the medical drama quit the show in 2019 to spend more time at home with his family.
The actor recently revealed that he had originally planned to only be off for a year, but due to the pandemic, things had to change.
Speaking to Digital Spy Michael explained: “I knew how long I wanted off and I really wanted to spend some time with my family. The run-up to the exit story was really intense and the hours we work are phenomenal.
“I knew I’d spent a long time away from my family and I wanted to be at home with them – to be a dad, to take the kids to school and things like that. I was due to go back a little bit sooner but obviously, the pandemic hit.”
The star added: “When the producers got in contact and stuck to their word by asking me to come back, it was a no brainer. It’s home to me. The show has been very good to me and so there was nothing to think about really.”
