Celebrity SAS fans spot rare gesture from Ant Middleton in inspirational abseil

Fans of Channel 4 reality show Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins were left taken aback on Sunday evening, as they spotted an incredibly rare gesture from Ant Middleton.

The formidable former soldier is known for his blunt attitude and stern features throughout the show.

But all that changed during an abseil task on Sunday, with each of the six remaining celebrities tasked with scaling a terrifying rope ladder to the top of a cement tower – and then running face-first down to the ground.

When it was Paralympic athlete Aled Davies’ turn to take up the challenge, things were made even tougher as he had to face the challenge with hemimelia of the right leg.

The condition means the fibula is completely absent in the leg, or shortened at birth.

Regardless, field athlete Aled has gone on to achieve an impressive career in sports – and he took the latest SAS challenge in his stride.

“Good effort, number 12,” Ant congratulated him once he reached the bottom – leaving Aled with a grin on his face.

But Aled wasn’t the only one smiling, as Ant also had a grin of his own on his face as the camera took him in.

Fans watching at home were left stunned by the gesture, as one penned: “It’s great to see the smile come out @antmiddleton!”

Someone else echoed: “#SASWhoDaresWins well sod me, Middleton just smiled – bet that hurt him!”

“Did Ant just smile, OMG! #SASWhoDaresWins,” another chimed in.

And a fourth fan penned: “Nothing but man love for @antmiddleton!”

Others simply pointed out how impressive Aled’s abseil was, with one penning: “Aled doing something as scary as this with a disability shows that anything is possible. Well done Aled what an inspiration you are!”

Someone else posted: “They were all really impressive, especially Aled and Wes.”

As another viewer tweeted: “Aled like the Terminator there! Brilliant!”, referring to how Aled had charged fearlessly down the tower.

Things got slightly darker later on, as Keiron Dyer was medically withdrawn from the course after collapsing due to injured ribs, which left him unable to breathe.

The former footballer collapsed while on night watch, with Aled having to call for help.

With only five recruits left, the rest of the celebs were forced to dive for a cache of supplies in freezing cold water – but X Factor winner Alexandra Burke couldn’t manage it due to her fear of water.

She also failed the abseiling task and was brought in for questioning in front of the DS.

SAS: Who Dares Wins continues next Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
