Charlotte Hawkins shuts down GMB's Adil Ray for 'judging her' after accent dig

Charlotte Hawkins was quick to defend herself on Monday’s bank holiday edition of Good Morning Britain, when her co-host Adil Ray took aim at her accent.

Adil, 47, playfully accused Charlotte, 46, of having a posh accent on the show, prompting the GMB presenter to hit back that he was “judging” her.

The tense conversation took place moments into the show, as the pair reflected on their plans for the bank holiday weekend.

Fellow presenter Sean Fletcher was forced to relax the tensions in the studio, pointing out the pair had no choice but to spend the next two and a half hours together.

Adil’s accent jibes began when Charlotte explained she’d enjoyed a night out on Saturday evening, taking advantage of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Charlotte insisted her co-host Adil was “judging” her based on her accent

Hosting a radio show, Smooth Classics at Seven, each Sunday on Classic FM, the mum-of-one usually has no choice but to get an early night on Saturdays – making the rare night out all the more special.

“I went out on Saturday night for the first time in however long, so that was a nice experience,” she said.

Poking fun at her accent, Adil then hit back: “And who were you with? Lady Chatterly?”

Charlotte tried her best to correct Adil, insisting: “It’s just not true, I don’t know where you’ve got this impression of me!”

Adil imitated Charlotte’s accent on the show – and the joke didn’t land well

Adil then mimicked Charlotte’s voice, remarking: “I don’t know where you’ve got that impression of me!”

Looking a little peeved, Charlotte then claimed Adil had been “judging” based on her accent, explaining her accent developed thanks to her childhood in Sussex.

She said: “No, but that’s judging me on my accent. Just because I grew up in Sussex, I speak like this.”

Sean Fletcher successfully eased the tensions in the Good Morning Britain studio

“Yeah but you like classical music, it all sort of fits into place…” Adil replied, only for Charlotte to fume: “Yeah but that doesn’t mean I’m part of the nobility does it?”

Thankfully, Sean Fletcher stepped in and made a light-hearted joke, successfully managing to lift the rather icy mood in the studios.

“You do know you’ve got two and half hours to go together?” he pointed out.
