Chas & Dave played on Eminem's breakout hit and helped rapper rocket to stardom

Though they enjoyed a glittering career on the stage as Chas & Dave, Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock actually helped one artist propel to stardom.

Back when Eminem was just a 26-year-old trying to become a rapper, Chas and Dave helped his major hit become a Grammy award-winning rap song.

Chas – who passed away in 2018 aged 74 – and his music partner Dave both featured on Eminem’s 1999 breakthrough hit My Name Is.

The hit song’s catchy guitar line was all Chas’ doing, while the bouncing bassline was Dave.

The duo made a huge name for themselves in the 80s as jobbing session players.

In 1975, the pair – whose career spanned over 40 years – played guitar and bass on the track titled ‘I’ve Got The…’ by musician Labi Siffre.

Eminem opted to take the sample – which is just under three minutes long – and insert it into his own hit.

The iconic refrain is hard to miss.

NME reports that author Mark Mason mentions the bombshell in his 2009 book The Importance of Being Trivial.

He writes: “The first [Chas] heard of his connection with rap royalty, he told me, was from his son. ‘He came into the room and said, “I can’t believe it – my dad’s on a worldwide hit!”

“What about royalties? ‘We ain’t had any yet,’ said Chas, ‘but someone’s chasing it up. We’ve signed something, anyway.’”

Eminem is not the only rapper to sample Siffre’s track, with the likes of Jay-Z, and Wu-Tang Clan members, Method Man and RZA also picking at the funk classic.

Chas & Dave met in the 1960s and went on to become one of the most famous duos in pop.

They won millions of fans with their pub singalong style.

Speaking about his late music partner, Dave said: “I was with Chas for 50 years. He was the first bass player I ever saw. He played bass when he was 17 and there weren’t many bass guitarists in England then.”

“He was a great player. He had a great sense of time and a fabulous musical ear,” he went on.

“And in all the years we were together, we only ever had four rehearsals. We hated rehearsing.

“We’d write a song and even if we only half knew it we’d go straight in and record it. Chas & Dave were always a whole different tub of cockles to everybody else.”
