Acclaimed comedian and actor Paul Mooney has died aged 79, his family has confirmed.
The US writer and screen star died after suffering a heart attack in his home in Oakland, California, his cousin Rudy Ealy has announced.
Journalist Roland Martin shared the news on Twitter, writing: “Comedic legend Paul Mooney has passed away.
“His cousin Rudy Ealy just called me from Paul’s phone and said he passed away two hours ago after suffering a heart attack at his home in Oakland. He was 79.
“We will pay tribute to him tonight on #RolandMartinUnfiltered.”
Mooney was best known for his starring role in The Buddy Holly Story, appearing opposite fellow Hollywood great Gary Busey while playing the singer Sam Cooke.
He also lent his comic talents to other comedians, working as a writer for the late, great, stand-up Richard Pryor.
A trail-blazing comedian, much of his work focused on the prevalence of racism in America, making shrewd observations.
Born in the town of Shreveport, Mooney moved to California as a child, before growing up to become a ringmaster with the Gatti-Charles Circus.
His time with the circus helped him to nurture his talent for comedy, eventually landing a job writing for comic Pryor, who is thought to be one of the greatest comedians of all time.
The Louisiana-born star also played Junebug in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and made several appearances on Chappelle’s Show, created by comedians Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan.
In 2004, he starred in his own comedy series Judge Mooney, as well as previously making appearances in the likes of The Richard Pryor Show and Real Husbands of Hollywood.
Mooney released a 2005 memoir titled Black Is the New White, looking back at his career and sharing his story.
After news of his death broke, a message was shared to Mooney’s official Twitter account, reading: “Thank you all from the bottom of all of our hearts …you’re all are the best!……
“Mooney World .. The Godfather of Comedy – ONE MOON MANY STARS! .. To all in love with this great man.. many thanks.”
Mooney is survived by three grown-up sons – Dwayne, Daryl and Shaun, having tragically lost his son Symeon in 2001.
