Coronation Street fans 'work out' Phelan and George DNA twist in ashes storyline

Coronation Street fans are certain they’ve rumbled a potential further connection between serial killer Pat Phelan and funeral director George Shuttleworth.

The villain’s ashes were discovered in the back room of the funeral parlour last week, with George insisting he had to get rid of them in a “respectful” manner, to Todd Grimshaw’s disgust.

His mum Eileen had suffered at the hands of her ex Pat, after the spree of murders he conducted around Weatherfield.

But now fans are certain that DNA could be a compelling factor in George keeping the ashes safe and sound – and that Pat is actually George’s brother.

Taking to Facebook, one wrote: “I really think George is Pat Phelan’s brother.”

Someone else quickly replied: “George will be related in some way, hence why he’s been so nice to Todd!”

“He could be but I hope not!” another fan penned.

While someone else thought there could be more to Pat’s memory “haunting” Eileen, writing: “I was thinking a twin brother storyline! So maybe you are right, who knows?”

“Fab twist if true!” a fifth viewer posted.

And both actors initially hailed from Liverpool – which adds even more stock to the theory.

Pat actor Connor McIntyre was born in Toxteth, Liverpool, while George star Tony Maudsley was born in Kirkby just miles away.

However, others weren’t quite so convinced, as one argued: “Isn’t he the son of Archie the old funeral director (Roy Hudd) who popped in and out of Corrie for years a friend of Audrey?”

Another agreed: “No, can’t see how Pat is Archie Shuttleworth’s son!”

“Is he not Archie’s son?” someone else pondered.

George first entered Soapland in December 2018, introducing himself to Audrey and Ken at his dad Archie’s will reading.

Audrey inherited a whopping £80,000 from her late pal, while Ken received a brass monkey that had originally belonged to Blanche.

In Friday night’s first instalment of the Manchester-based soap, George wasn’t happy with Todd’s plans to ditch the ashes, as he remarked on George ‘keeping Pat Phelan downstairs’.

“You make it sound like I’ve got him propped up in a chair!” the funeral director argued, insisting: “It’s not Phelan, it’s just his ashes.”

He added: “I’ll get it sorted soon as, in a manner that’s respectful to both parties.”

But could George have a DNA connection to the late serial killer Pat?

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30pm on ITV.
