Corrie fans thrilled as Asha comes out to dad Dev in LGBT romance plot

Coronation Street fans couldn’t get enough as Asha Alahan came out to her dad Dev on Wednesday’s episode.

The 16-year-old told her father that she and Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) are dating as he struggled to get his head around the news.

She said that he didn’t have to worry about her seeing another guy – because she was actually seeing the girl down the road.

Asha (Tanisha Gorey) was scarred by her previous relationship with Corey after naked photos of her were leaked online.

She dumped him after he turned abusive – and soon started developing feeling for the cafe worker.

As she applied her make-up during Wednesday’s episode, demanding Dev wanted to know who her date was with.

“Can I ask you who this lucky fella is?” he started grilling her.

“Sure. But it’s not a boy. It’s a girl. It’s Nina from the cafe,” she responded.

Open-mouthed, Dev said: “Nina? So what, you’re like a lesbian now? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

She replied: “A lesbian? You are so last century. I just like people. We don’t have to label themselves any more.

“If you knew the lads at my school, you would be on your knees giving thanks right now.”

He jumped in: “I’m not judging you, but last year was so tough for you. Talk to me about this.”

Asha responded: “At least you don’t have to worry about me falling pregnant now. I’m not ashamed of it, and neither should you be.”

Nina Lucas is Asha’s new love interest and the pair are growing closer

Accepting the news, Dev stuttered: “It’s good, of course that’s good – it makes me sad to know how unhappy you were.”

Viewers loved her frank approach and took to Twitter to praise the storyline.

“Well done girl, Dev let her be,” one put.

“Asha looks so happy whenever she talks about Nina,” another wrote.

A third said: “This conversation between Dev and Asha is so important. Honest communication and acceptance.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
