Countdown tension has been building as friends and co-stars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent reportedly “don’t care for” new host Anne Robinson.
It has been reported that sources on set feel an “awkward and uncomfortable atmosphere” between the former Weakest Link host and Countdown’s two resident co-stars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
Anne Robinson, 77, started presenting the Channel 4 daytime programme, Countdown, earlier on in the summer.
Countdown is filmed at Media City studios in Salford, and staff who work on the production of the show have claimed that there is a lot of tension off-camera.
Sources have claimed that the tensions are as a result of Robinson’s “rather grand ways”.
Lexicographer Susie Dent has allegedly sided with Rachel Riley, with their alliance being dubbed as a “young versus old” divide.
The Mail on Sunday has reported that a source revealed to them: “The tension between Rachel and Anne is being openly discussed. It is very much Rachel and Susie against Anne – a case of two camps.
“Lots of crew are discussing what is going on. Rachel and Susie don’t care much for Anne and her rather grand ways and things have become pretty uncomfortable.
“Anne likes to do things her way, while Rachel doesn’t go along with how she operates. This has now led to little social interaction between them away from the cameras.”
It has also been said that Anne doesn’t get along with people on set, and even brings her own makeup artist and stylist.
The sharp-tongued TV personality and host presented The Weakest Link between 2000 and 2012.
Ahead of her debut on Countdown, the host, who is known for being ‘the Queen of mean’, said: “I think there are certain things you couldn’t say now. It’s particular areas that ‘woke’ wouldn’t allow.”
When presenting her show The Weakest Link back in the early noughties, she asked a female contestant why she was “dressed like a lesbian”, while in another she quizzed a single mum about how many of her three boys had ASBOs.
Earlier this year she said: “It’s hard to pinpoint what I would or wouldn’t say – it’s just a general consciousness that you have to think much more carefully.”
Anne Robinson presents Countdown every weekday at 2.10pm from Monday on Channel 4.
