Dan Walker fumes fans have 'crossed a line' as he addresses Strictly fix rumours

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker was left fuming on Monday morning, as he furiously declared fans have “crossed a line” when it comes to the Strictly Come Dancing fix rumours.

Some fans have dubbed the show a “fix” after Dan made it through to the quarter finals despite consistently low scores from the judges, while Tilly Ramsay was booted off the show on Sunday night.

She had to dance off with CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson.

On Monday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, Dan was left blushing as he and co-star Sally Nugent went through the day’s papers, with Sally announcing: “I don’t normally like to do this, but…”

Dan wondered: “Oh, what am I being accused of now?”

“It is about you, actually. It’s nonsense, I’m afraid,” Sally explained. “I just want to tell everybody that it’s nonsense because this is in the papers this morning: Strictly Come Dancing fans claim fix over BBC’s Dan Walker.

“What?” she asked as she began to read aloud. “‘BBC bosses face fresh allegations as Breakfast host Dan Walker survived another week’.”

Dan explained: “Listen, I’m just having a lovely time. I don’t get the fix stuff, I’m just very thankful for all the support and the people who keep voting. And we’re just enjoying dancing, that’s basically it.

“I know stuff like that gets written based on three or four comments or tweets, and it’s lovely that people care about the programme. But then I genuinely get thousands of messages every day from people who are enjoying it and having a nice time,” he explained.

But it came as Dan started to discuss his emotional tribute to Gary Speed last week, breaking down in tears as he addressed the death of the Premier League star who died 10 years ago.

Gary took his own life in 2011.

“What really… I wouldn’t say annoyed me, but disappointed me over the weekend…” Dan explained. “Some people actually accused me of even using Gary Speed’s tribute last week to try and gain support for Strictly.”

Clearly furious, Dan said: “Listen, I know people enjoy the show, but don’t be daft. There’s a line, and I think stuff like that crosses that line.”

He went on to add: “The Rumba is really hard! Nadiya’s two time world champion, she’s brilliant at the Rumba, and I said to her last week, ‘I’ve got a ridiculously busy week, but I will give you everything’. I just knew she wanted to do it well because it’s her favourite dance.”

Dan even admitted he isn’t voting for himself on the Strictly app, as he went on: “Another thing to say about the fix thing – I’m not even voting for myself, I’m still voting for Rose!”

Sally wondered: “You’re not voting for yourself? I’m voting for you!”

Dan replied: “Rose and Giovanni are just, so good. I think everything she does is amazing.”

BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One.
