BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker had to withhold his laughter as an animal expert began to chime strange owl noises live on the show.
Dan, 44, managed to raise a smile but maintained composure as the zoologist described the “twit twit twoo” sounds that different owls make.
Nanette Davies from the Vale Royal Falcony Centre, who appeared with Tara the Tawny Owl on the programme, was able to distinguish difference between male and females by their chirp.
Dan asked: “So Tawny Owls are these the one’s that make to twit twoo noises?”
In response, Nanette said: “They are, this is it, this is the owl that everybody asks me, what is it that I hear at night?
“They’re sort of heard and not seen, females do that classic ‘cuwweek’ or ‘tooweet’ and the males answer back with the long drawn-out ‘tooowwwhho’.
Keeping his cool, Dan joked: “That’s a very good impression, you’ve obviously been perfecting this for many years.”
Dan swiftly followed up with another question: “From this study what have learned about Owl’s like Tara and how can that help us understand to help them, support them and keep them safe?”
Nanette explained: “They rear their young and the young fledge quite early on, they do sort of leave the nest at five weeks old and they stay quite local.
“They do venture out and obviously it’s dependant on the habitat and what sort of food supplies are available and they do quite well in woodland areas because of the variety of food that they eat.”
Tara the Owl seemed to be a hoot with fans on Twitter who took to their keyboards to praise the wild bird.
One person penned: “Watched @BBCBreakfast & so enjoyed hearing about Tara the Tawny Owl and the 40 year study in Kielder, Northumberland about their habitat & breeding.
“What a lovely way to start my day.”
“@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker I’ve fallen in love with Tara the Tawny Owl,” exclaimed another.
“@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker What a beautiful owl,” added a third.
