Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker 'quits after three years of iconic role'

Jodie Whittaker has reportedly quit her role as the iconic Doctor Who.

The 38-year-old, who is the first woman to play the Time Lord and was the 14th Doctor, is said to be quitting at the end of the next series which is due to air in the Autumn.

Like the majority of other actors who have played the character, Jodie reportedly told BBC bosses she too only wanted to play the Doctor for three years.

The Mirror has reported that an insider claims bosses are being “hush-hush” but “everybody knows she is leaving”.

They also claimed bosses are already “gearing up for a regeneration”.

The insider told the publication: “It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration.

“Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed.

“It’s very exciting.”

The source said the star is excited and keen to pursue other roles away from the series.

Socially distant filming is due to be wrapped in the summer and then the show is due to air in the autumn.

Bosses previously announced this series will only feature eight episodes due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Many other actors who played the Doctor also left after three years.

These were William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

Jodie once said that the thought of leaving the show, “made her cry”.

She said: “If I even think about leaving, it makes me cry. When it happens, I can pre-empt it will be my most devastating moment.

“I absolutely adore it. At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it’s not yet.

“I’m clinging on tight.”
