EastEnders viewers were left feeling emotional after tuning in to Monday night’s episode as the soap made a very obvious nod to coronavirus.
Following the news that the nation is going back into an official lockdown, the latest offering of the BBC soap was more than apt.
At one point nurse Sonia Fowler (played by Natalie Cassidy) was seen breaking down on the hospital ward where she works.
Dressed in her blue uniform, a colleague of hers found her quietly sobbing and asked if she was alright.
Sonia told her she was fine but admitted she had been working for 18 hours straight and was supposed to have gone home.
Later on in the episode she was seen snapping at fellow Walford resident Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) while taking his blood pressure.
After Sonia chucked Ian out of her house, viewers were quick to take to Twitter about the emotional scenes.
“Aw damn man, i hope Sonia’s okay man #EastEnders,” one person posted.
Another fan of the show tweeted: “Sonia’s scenes in tonight’s #EastEnders are so strongly needed. Before moaning that you are fed up with another lockdown, fed up of home schooling, fed up of rules etc, try putting yourself in the NHS shoes. #ThankYouNHS.”
And a third added: “Sonia is sick of it lol that’s really the reality of a nurse at this moment in time #EastEnders.”
A fourth viewer tweeted: “Sonia talking about how covid has impacted people is very fitting considering we’ve just been put into another lockdown #EastEnders.”
While another person speculated: “I think Sonia saw someone die from covid #EastEnders.”
Fans of the show were not happy when the BBC confirmed that Monday night’s episode would be airing later due to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s live announcement.
