EastEnders' Ian Beale leaves Albert Square after eating Sharon's poisonous meal

EastEnders fans were gobsmacked as Ian Beale seemed to make his departure at the end of tonight’s episode.

Sharon Mitchell had attempted to kill Ian by feeding him poison in his pasta, but he found out her plans before chowing down on the deadly dish.

She told Ian she knew about him locking her son Denny on the boat and leaving him to die.

The guilt got too much for Ian, who proceeded to eat the poison himself in an attempt to end his life.

As Ian chowed down on the food, Sharon shouted: “What are you doing?! Ian? Ian? You’re not going to make me feel guilty… you’re going to spit it out, you’re pathetic.”

Sharon shrieked: “You can die alone!”

She then realised Ian was determined to end his life and tried to stop him.

He said: “Sharon, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry! I didn’t save your beautiful boy – I deserve to die.”

“No you don’t,” Sharon said. “I need to leave.”

Sharon stopped him, and he proceeded to vomit the poison up.

Ian then did a runner, leaving Albert Square behind him, but will he return?

Viewers went into meltdown at the end of the episode, wondering whether Ian had made a permanent departure from Walford.

They went into a frenzy on Twitter, as one wrote: “Wait has he actually left. I need to know”.

While another penned: “Has he left?”

A third added: “Ian Beale! What happens next??”

Another wrote: Wheres Ian off too??”

“Does this mean Ian’s gone??? THANK GODDDD. BYEEEEEEEE[sic]”, remarked a fifth EastEnders fan.

EastEnders’ official Twitter account tweeted: “Goodbye, Ian”, so it seems he could be leaving the soap for good.

EastEnders continues on Monday at 8.05pm on BBC One.
