Eurovision host Scott Mills was left red-faced after making a huge blunder during the first of the song contest’s semi-finals on Tuesday.
The incident left his co-host Sara Cox, who was lined up for the competition at the last minute after Rylan Clark-Neal had to pull out due to illness, in dire need of a “new commentator”.
While introducing Cyprus’s act Elena Tsagrinou and her song ‘El Diablo’, Scott wrongly translated the song title to mean ‘church’.
But, rather awkwardly, it actually means ‘devil’.
Introducing the song, Scott said: “There’s been a little bit of trouble from religious groups for the lyric in the song: ‘I gave my heart to el diablo’. El diablo translates to ‘church’ and some have said it promotes devil worship.”
But after the upbeat track concluded, Sara had to chip in with: “When Scott said there ‘El diablo means church’, it actually means devil – not church!”
A red-faced Scott was clearly embarrassed as he said: “They’re not even similar, why did I write church when it’s devil? And why would she be dressed like that if it was church?”
Sara replied: “I know – she wouldn’t be let in any church in that outfit!”
And a humiliated Scott quipped: “New commentators please! Apologies!”
Eurovision fans immediately headed to Twitter to point out the gaffe, with one penning: “Excellent language skills on display at @bbceurovision. Apparently ‘El Diablo’ means church in Greek!”
Someone else pointed out: “Scott Mills just said ‘El Diablo’ translates to ‘the church’, so Elena is singing about becoming a nun, in essence. Seems… unlikely.”
While another giggled: “Diablo means church does it? Lol no wonder the church are upset!” accompanied by a row of cry-laughing emojis.
“Ahahaha can’t stop laughing at Scott Mills. Of course ‘El Diablo’ means ‘church’!” a fourth social media user chuckled.
Someone else commented: “Lololol the British commentators just messed up completely by saying ‘diablo’ means ‘church’. Had to apologise live on air. #Eurovision.”
Cyprus, who are among the bookies’ favourites along with Malta to be crowned winners of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, wowed audiences with their performance on Tuesday, with someone pointing out that it looked like a “live exorcism” as Elena writhed about on stage.

Elsewhere on the night, Russia’s act proved a hit as she stripped out of her costume live on-stage.
Manizha had begun the performance in a huge, tea cosy-like dress on wheels, before abandoning it partway through her act to reveal a bright orange boiler suit underneath.
Scott couldn’t resist a quip: “I thought it’d be like an actual Russian doll underneath, like the boiler suit would come off and there’d be another one underneath!”
