Ex-Corrie star Katie McGlynn films smear test to encourage women to have theirs

Katie McGlynn has filmed her cervical screening (smear test) to inspire women to have theirs done too.

The 27-year-old former Coronation Street star was filmed as she went for her test to show viewers how “quick and easy” it was.

Katie’s Corrie character Sinead Osbourne died of cervical cancer, and McGlynn wants to encourage women to get their test done as it can potentially save lives.

Her trip to get her screening was shown on ITV’s Lorraine for Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

The TV star acknowledged that a lot of smear tests were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Katie urged women to rebook their screenings.

Sharing the video on her social media platforms, Katie said: “As seen this morning I went on a mission for @lorraine to document my smear test to remind everyone how quick and easy it is!

“Please ladies I know I sound like a broken record but it is SO important to go for your smears when you’re due. Catching it early (a matter of weeks) can potentially save your life!

“I realise we’re in a global pandemic and a lot of smears have been cancelled.

“If you’ve previously had abnormal cells or have not yet had a smear or are many months/years overdue please contact your GP surgery to get it rebooked!

“If you’re shielding, again contact your GP surgery to get the best option for your smear!”

Katie added: “I felt super safe in the current conditions, it was so quick and easy.

“Coronavirus doesn’t stop cancer, don’t ignore any signs/symptoms and pester your GP surgery for your smears.”

The film sees Katie explain that cervical screenings are the best way to protect against cervical cancer.

During the video, Katie told viewers how the test was. She explained: “It was really straightforward.

“I felt super comfortable. I didn’t feel embarrassed.

“There were some thoughts going through my head like ‘ooh I’ve not shaved my legs.

“But all in all it was a pretty smooth experience.”

She added: “It could save your life. If I could do it whilst filming it all then I think you can too.”
