Five ex-Love Island stars have been listed on the Advertising Standards Authority’s (ASA) watchlist after they were caught breaking the advertising rules on Instagram.
Eve Gale, Jess Gale, Belle Hassan, Francesca Allen and Anna Vakili have all been added to a dedicated page on the ASA website for celebs who frequently flout the rules.
The list is part of the ASA’s crack-down on influencers who don’t follow the correct rules of Instagram promotions.
Many of the reality TV stars have frequently not listed when something is an ad, and so misled their followers into believing they were not paid to promote the post.
The ASA curated their watchlist to keep an eye on celebrities who frequently flout advertising rules.
Jodie Marsh, Chloe Ferry, Lucy Mecklenburgh and Chloe Khan are among the celebrities who have previously been added to the watchlist.
The ex-Islanders will stay on the list for three months so the ASA can keep a close eye on what they post and ensure it fits within advertising guidelines.
If the celebs fail to abide by social media advertising rules they can be sanctioned by the ASA.
The ad regulation organisation recently discovered that only 35% of 122 UK-based influencers’ content abided with the correct guidelines on social media advertising.
As Love Island contestants are frequently the ones that flout the rules, the ASA partnered with ITV to create a “cheat sheet”.
However, the ASA don’t want to give ex-Islanders any slack when it comes to advertising content.
In an online statement the ASA wrote: “Love Island may be over for another year, but as the new stars leave the villa they need to make sure they’re treating their followers fairly by being upfront and clear with them about when their posts are ads.”
The ex-Islanders that have now been added to the watchlist had previously been contacted by the ASA and asked to provide an assurance that they would be clear and upfront with their ad labels.
The women will now be subject to a period of enhanced monitoring spot checks and could face possible fines if they do not abide by the rules in the future.
