Friends Reunion fans' fury as HBO Max 'crashes' leaving viewers unable to watch

The Friends reunion has ‘crashed’ streaming US services HBO Max and HBO Go as an influx of fans have swarmed to watch the eagerly anticipated 104-minute special.

Users are experiencing technical difficulties, and have taken to social media to share their frustrations at not being able to access the special as it premiered on Thursday morning – and many got up in the very early hours in the United States to watch.

“THE SITE IS NOT WORKING, DID WE JUST CRASH HBO GO?” one fan wailed on Twitter, as another added: “HBO Go is not even f***ing loading!”

Someone else wrote: “HBO Go is useless right now!”

While a fourth penned: “Today’s episode should be named as: ‘The One Where HBO Max Crashed One Minute After The #FriendsReunion Drops’!”

“Where is my Friends reunion, HBO Go?” another wailed.

While someone else decided to reference the sitcom’s legendary theme song: “HBO Go: *stops working* SO NO ONE TOLD ME LIFE WAS GONNA BE THIS WAY…”

One user posted a screenshot of the error they were receiving, which read: “Cannot read property ‘metadata’ of null”.

The streaming service cannot be accessed in the UK regardless, as the website states it “is accessible only in the U.S. and certain U.S. territories from your real IP address.”

Instead, the reunion is available to stream from the United Kingdom on Now TV.

The special will also air live on Sky at 8pm on Thursday, according to Now TV’s social media.

However, some fans have so far been successful in watching the episode, and are “already emotional” at seeing the six pals back together.

“I’m getting chills!” someone gushed, as another posted: “I’m not crying!” with a row of tearful emojis.

Rather than a fully-fledged episode of the much-loved sitcom, the special is instead comprised of a fly-on-the-wall documentary in which the six original cast members revisit the old set, and a special question and answer session with The Late Late Show host James Corden.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer also gather for a table read of some iconic scripts.

But some of its celebrity cameos have been branded “unhinged” in a review by Variety, as the Q&A session culminates in a strange, star-studded fashion show.

Cara Delevingne appears in the legendary holiday armadillo costume, with pop icon Justin Bieber cropping up as ‘Spudnik’. Even Cindy Crawford shows her face, sporting Ross’s famous leather trousers.

And Lady Gaga makes an appearance to duet with Lisa Kudrow on Phoebe’s hit song Smelly Cat.

But perhaps most random is a David Beckham cameo, as he cheerfully recounts his favourite episode.

The Guardian alleged that the football superstar was wedged into the episode “for seemingly no other reason than he is mates with Corden.”
