Gillian Anderson baffles fans as she accepts Golden Globe with American accent

Viewers have been left baffled after hearing actress Gillian Anderson accepting her Golden Globe award with an American actress.

Gillian, 52, has spoken in a British accent for the vast majority of her television career, as well as cinema career but few know that she is in fact from Chicago, on the West Coast of the states.

The star who is known for her roles in The X-Files and Sex Education has lived in London since 2002 and quickly picked up on the British accent.

However, shortly after she won at the Golden Globes, fans flocked to Twitter to share their confusion.

The actress who won Best Supporting Actress for taking on the role of Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher thanked her ex-partner, Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown for “imagining I could inhabit Mrs T” and “writing an exquisitely multi-dimensional character”.

One viewer tweeted: “Gillian Anderson is American??? I never suspected a thing, she did amazing as Thatcher.”

While a second went on to say: “I am still so f**cked in the head that Gillian Anderson is an American #GoldenGlobes.”

“Aye Gillian Anderson accepted her speech in an American accent- I was not expecting that OH?” added a third.

Before a fourth confused fan said: “Wait I’m just discovering that Gillian Anderson is in fact American….even though she lived in London for the first 10 years of her life… her accent is American?”

Mum-of-three Gillian has previously described herself as “bi-dialectal” and can often switch between her British and American accents as and when she is required to.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she said: “Part of me wishes I could control it, but I can’t. I just slip into one or the other.

“When I moved to the States I tried hard to cling on to my British accent because it made me different.”

Gillian wasn’t the only The Crown star taking home an award, with Emma Corrin who played the role of Diana, Princess of Wales, taking home Best Actress in a TV Series.

Josh O’Connor who portrayed a younger Prince Charles also accepted Best Actor in a TV series, while The Crown as a whole won best TV series.
