GMB fans fight tears as Rob Rinder gets emotional over traumatic family history

Good Morning Britain viewers were incredibly moved by a poignant interview with Rob Rinder and his mother Angela Cohen on Wednesday’s show.

The mother and son duo, who are descendants of a Holocaust survivor, have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for their services to Holocaust education.

Speaking with hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Rob opened up about the devastating trauma their family endured at the hands of antisemitism.

Angela’s family were tragically murdered in the Holocaust, inspiring her to become the head of the ’45 Aid Society, a charity set up in 1963 by Holocaust survivors.

Opening up about becoming MBEs, Rob said: “In a year when so many other people deserve gongs I have to say we both feel slightly self-conscious about it.”

The TV personality, who is known for his legal show Judge Rinder, went on: “Mum has worked so hard building on the success of the ’45 Aid Society, which is exactly as you describe, it’s an organisation that brings about witnessing.

“It’s about ‘the truth’. And for the Queen to honour us, but it’s much more of a broader narrative which is exactly as you describe Richard, shining light on the truth.

“That’s what we need to bring light into the dark places and the recesses of the world that those who would seek to use whatever platform they get to deny the holocaust.”

He finished: “Not just to deny the holocaust, but to use whatever space and dark oxygen they have for all sorts of anti-Jewish racism and all hate.”

Last year, Rob and Angela appeared in the acclaimed BBC One series My Family, The Holocaust and Me, which shone a light on their own family’s ordeal.

Watching from home, viewers were moved by the emotional speech, as they praised Rob and his mum for their commitment to the cause.
