GMB fans 'switch off' as Richard Madeley hosts on programme

Good Morning Britain viewers have “switched off” after presenter Richard Madeley made a reappearance on the morning programme.

Richard is one of many temporary presenters taking up Piers Morgan’s old seat after his dramatic storm-off in March.

The Richard & Judy star has been presenting the show on-and-off since 2017, but has finally returned to help present the programme on Thursday.

He took his seat alongside co-host Charlotte Hawkins to interview Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer in one segment, before chatting through the government’s travel Green List with Jeffrey Archer and Ayesha Hazarika.

But many fans weren’t impressed – and insisted they would plump for BBC Breakfast instead.

The morning shows have been competing for ratings since their inception, and GMB briefly managed to overtake BBC with Piers at the helm – but those numbers have dropped since his epic strop and subsequent storm-off.

“You have no chance with [these] presenters especially Adil and Richard, you need Piers Morgan!” one viewer ranted on Twitter. “I didn’t miss a morning with Piers, now I watch BBC.”

Someone else furiously wrote: “Please no more Madeley! Get this sorted or I’m off to watch BBC!”

A third simply mourned Piers’ exit, as they penned: “GMB has been revamped a few times over the years, probably due a revamp now. Piers made a difference, he got people talking, moaning, got their backs up, pushed for answers. Made interesting TV! He’s like Marmite.”

As a compilation of GMB’s best bits aired to celebrate its nomination for the Best Daytime Show category at the National Television Awards, one fan complained: “The compilation of clips shows just how much Piers contributed to the success and fun of the show. He is greatly missed.”

However, plenty more were enjoying the change in presenting styles, as they welcomed Richard’s ‘professionalism’.

“How good is it to have a true professional hosting today rather than the condescending manner we have been subjected to! But I still want Piers back,” someone posted to Twitter.

And another chimed: “Great to see Richard back this morning!”

A third social media user even went as far as to suggest they’d like Richard to take up the mantle permanently: “Great to see Richard on board. Hopefully permanently if we can’t have Piers.”
