GMB viewers mortified as Richard Madeley makes geography blunder in awkward gaffe

Richard Madeley appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday alongside host Susanna Reid to discuss a range of topics including vaccine distribution globally.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined Susanna and Richard via video link to discuss the vaccine rollout going outside of the UK.

As the trio began talking about the best options and distributing vaccines to children and shipping them out elsewhere, fans couldn’t help but notice that Richard tripped-up on one major fact.

While discussing the rollout with Gordon, Richard said: “It’s not just loading these boxes onto plans and flying them out to countries like Africa, we’ve got to have the infrastructure to be able to deliver the jabs haven’t we.”

Gordon added: “Yes we’ve been working on that as well and we’re getting the money to give it to African countries so that they can build up their ability to administer the vaccines not just in the cities but in the rural areas and the small towns.”

Despite the pair discussing an important topic, the minds of viewers immediately went elsewhere as they were left shell-shocked by the comments.

Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: “Richard! Africa is not a country. It’s a continent! ‘Countries like Africa’ [eye roll emoji].”

Another said: “Jesus Christ. Richard Madeley just called Africa a country on GMB.”

Meanwhile, others were sharing the phrase “Countries like Africa” paired with mems as they shared their shock regarding his comments.

Elsewhere, Richard, Susanna and Gordon discussed the vaccine drive and some wasted jabs.

Susanna said: “I think people watching might think, well hang on a moment, we hadn’t expected to do vaccinations of young people and we hadn’t expected to do the booster jabs.

“There was a hope that a double jab might be enough, is there a reason to be a little bit cautious about those jabs we have in reserve because there may be other reasons we might need to use them?”

Gordon reassured that there are still enough vaccines to get around the world while doing the boosters and jabbing the 12-15 year olds and still have some in reserve to be able to distribute, adding: “Around 100 million will be wasted if we don’t take action.”

The debate regarding rolling the vaccine out elsewhere continues.

GMB returns weekdays at 6am on ITV.
