GMB's Ben Shephard admits he's in 'agony' after undergoing serious leg surgery

Ben Shephard shared a positive update with fans on Saturday afternoon, having undergone ACL reconstruction surgery on his right leg.

The GMB star, 46, thanked his fans for their messages of support, revealing he went under the knife around eleven days ago.

ACL reconstruction is a surgery that replaces a torn anterior cruciate in the leg, and Ben has been undergoing physiotherapy to aid his recovery.

Seen perched on an armchair in the living room, Ben shared a glimpse at his leg, describing the healing process as “agony”.

Speaking to the camera, he gestured to a Physiolab machine around his knee, saying: “I spent most of my days attached to this machine here.

“It pumps freezing cold water via a tube into the cuff that’s around my knee and helps reduce the swelling.”

“It’s agony at times, as anyone who has been through this will know, but a necessary evil. We’re taking this slowly,” he added.

A regular participant in Soccer Aid, Ben injured his leg when he was playing football several months ago, and medical professionals decided the operation was necessary to rehabilitate his knee.

Reaching out to his fans, he said: “There’s lots of you going through similar or waiting for ops, and some great advice from those who’ve been through ACL surgery too. Thank you for every single one.”

The Good Morning Britain presenter will return to the studio on Monday morning, hosting alongside Susanna Reid after several weeks off work.

He went on: “Physio has begun with @symmetryperformance Mo, my Physio, got me through about 5 @socceraid matches over the years, so he knows how broken I am everywhere, he’s certainly got his work cut out!!!!

“Anyway, I’ll keep you updated as I go back to @gmb with @susannareid100 on Monday. Hopefully, you’ll be waking up with us- I just need to remember to set my alarm clock.”

In his spare time, Ben is devoted to raising money for charity through fitness, taking part in seven different seasons of Soccer Aid on ITV.

2018 saw him appointed the coach of the England team for the footie charity campaign, as an injury meant he was unable to take to the pitch.

“Gutted that I’m injured and can’t play this year, but will be back next year!! U can join the team + fundraise for #socceraid for @UNICEF_uk,” he told fans at the time.

Hopefully, the ACL surgery will mean he can return to the football pitch in the months to come.
