Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid plans to continue wearing a face covering after July 19, despite the government’s decision to ease restrictions.
The Monday date has been dubbed “Freedom Day,” as it will see all lockdown measures lifted, with face masks no longer compulsory.
On top of that, the one-metre social distancing rule will be banished, and house parties of any size will be permitted.
While Susanna won’t be obliged to wear a mask, the broadcaster, 50, will continue to wear one to aid the fight against Covid.
The GMB star explained she believed it is wiser to wear a mask in “any enclosed environment,” where the virus can be more easily transmitted.
Turning to her co-stars Dr Hilary Jones and Richard Madeley as they debated “should face masks stay mandatory,” she said: “I think I will carry on wearing it.”
She added: “I think masks in medical settings are going to continue to be what we have to do. So that’s an obvious mask-wearing.”
Seasoned journalist Susanna has grown accustomed to wearing a mask and feels safer wearing a face covering when taking public transport.
“I think our behaviour has changed,” she said.
“And I know that people are very split – in fact, I was in a tube carriage the other day and it was literally split half in half.
“I was sitting next to someone who was not wearing a mask, and opposite two people who weren’t wearing a mask. And other people in the carriage were wearing masks, and I was.
“I now feel like my behaviour has changed.”
Though her co-star Richard felt differently, Susanna added: “I don’t want to not wear a mask anymore in those situations.”
While Richard is keen to take off his mask, the stand-in presenter conceded he will happily wear a mask if the setting calls for it.
“I don’t want to wear it anymore,” he said, adding: “I think I’m just going to read the vibe.”
Meanwhile, medical professional Dr Hilary agreed with Susanna, urging GMB viewers to continue wearing their face masks for the foreseeable future.
“We’ve already got a lot of freedom. I’m saying people need to exercise a lot of restraint,” he said.
“I think you should wear masks.”
Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
