After Piers Morgan’s dramatic exit from Good Morning Britain in early March, presenter Susanna Reid is reportedly being lined up as the show’s solo star of the show, as TV execs want her to take full reigns of the breakfast programme and structure the programme around her.
The Sun reported that Susanna, 50, will continue her role as host but will also have rotating co-stars for the next six months, as TV bosses try to ensure that they keep her role on the show.
It has also been alleged that execs are very keen to have Alex Beresford a more regular GMB host. In addition to this, Andi Peters who regularly hosts competitions on the breakfast show may also get a bigger position, after proving to be a popular hit amongst viewers and behind the scenes.
ITV have not ultimately ruled out a potential long term host to fill Piers’ boots just yet but for now, this how execs plan to structure the show for the next six months.
Speaking on the matter last night, a close source said that since Piers’ sudden departure things have had to shift rapidly on the show.
The source explained: “What ITV needs now, more than ever, are calm heads and someone to steady the ship.
“Susanna has proven herself a consummate broadcaster for the past ten years — and clearly has the star factor.
“She is smart, feisty and opinionated. She may have been Piers’ foil for the past five years, but she’s so much more than this — and now it’s very much a case of The Susanna Show.”
The source also claims that they have offered Susanna full backing and would like her to take more of a lead role from an editorial perspective too.
Momentarily, Susanna also hosts GMB alongside Kate Garraway, Charlotte Hawkins and occasionally Adil Ray.
Weatherman Alex Beresford, 50, has made it known to TV execs that he would like a bigger role on the show, according to reports.
Last week Friday Alex was given the opportunity to present the show alongside Kate.
An insider explained that though Alex has not yet formally applied for Pier’s old job, he is still very keen to move up the ranks and have a more solid position on the programme.
Alex’s on-air clash with Pier’s regarding the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey led the outspoken presenter to walk off the show in a huff.
When Piers walked off set, Alex said: “I’m sorry but Piers just spouts off on a regular basis and we have to sit there and listen.”
Later on that day after ITV received an astonishing 41,000 Ofcom complaints within two days, Piers Morgan announced that he was leaving the show.
The government-approved regulatory Ofcom explained that they had launched an investigation under its harm and offence rules due to Piers’ harsh comments towards Meghan and her views on the Royal Family.
Despite this, since Piers’ exit, GMB ratings have dropped and many viewers have petitioned for his role to be reinstated.
