GMB's Susanna Reid slammed by viewers for getting it wrong over 'staycation' comments

Presenter Susanna Reid has returned to the Good Morning Britain lineup following her summer break, that she recently described as a “staycation”.

The host presented alongside Ben Shephard and described the backlash she got for her use of the term “staycation” regarding her summer break.

The GMB host returned to front the ITV breakfast show on Wednesday following her time off.

As they introduced themselves back in the hot seats ready for the new season of the show, Susanna and Ben shared updates from their summer holidays.

Susanna began: “I felt a bit like that at 3.35 this morning, our survey said [audible negative noise from Family Fortunes]”.

“That noise was ringing in our ears,” noted Ben, who was also back in the studio after a summer stint away.

Susanna then said to her co-star: “I couldn’t believe it, it’s so early, isn’t it?”

Ben also referred to how dark it was when waking up, highlighting a tweet from Daily Mirror associate editor and GMB regular Kevin Maguire, who commented that “winter is Coming”.

Susanna then described her trip to Cornwall that she enjoyed over the summer period.

Ben added: “You had some adventures in the South West of the UK on your holiday?”

Susanna replied: “Went to gorgeous Cornwall. Got told off for calling it a staycation. It’s not a staycation, Ben.”

“Because you’re not staying at home,” Ben quipped.

Susanna claimed: “No, but I thought that staying at home was staying in the UK, and having a lovely holiday in the UK.”

Ben jokingly responded: “More fool you.”

“More fool me,” nodded Susanna.

“A staycation is when you stay home, if you holiday within your home,” added Ben, “if you’re going to Devon or Cornwall…”

Susanna chuckled and said: “I thought that’s a lockdown.”

Viewers waded in on the “staycation” debate, with some adamant that Susanna was wrong.

One said: “At last – GMB has acknowledged that a Staycation is STAYING AT HOME – not holidaying in the UK.”

Another wrote: “What you are describing is not a staycation . Why is this so problematic to people.”

And a third added: “Yes staycation is staying at home; going somewhere in the uk for a break is holiday.”

Susanna then thanked the “good people of Cornwall” for providing her with such a lovely holiday and added there were “glimmers” of sunshine.

Ben also shared that he had had a week in Devon with his family and additionally visited the Isles of Scilly too.

Susanna then highlighted that it was “nice to take a break due” to the lots of “heavy news” around currently.

The presenter made a brief return during her summer break to stand in for her colleague Kate Garraway while she planned a family holiday for herself and two children Darcey and Billy.

Though it was an emotional trip for the family as it marked the first holiday without her husband Derek Draper as he remained at home due to him still fighting to recover from Covid-19.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
