Hocus Pocus 2 confirmed with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker comeback

The Sanderson sisters will finally be returning to our screens in 2022 as the sequel to the 1993 film Hocus Pocus will be hitting Disney+.

While news of the production had already been announced last year, on national streaming day Disney confirmed the original stars will be returning to play their roles.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are ready to get back into their classic roles for an unlikely sequel.

The confirmation of the returning cast also came with news of a director change.

Director Anne Fletcher, best known for feature films The Proposal and 27 Dresses, has taken over the role from previous creator Adam Shankman, who will instead receive an executive producer credit.

Shankman said this about his departure: “As heartbroken as I am that I won’t be able to direct my friends Bette, Sarah Jessica and Kathy in what is sure to be nothing short of a major event for Disney+ due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t be more pleased to be handing over the reins to Anne, who has brought so much laughter and joy into people’s lives with her previous work.”

The original Hocus Pocus movie, directed by Kenny Ortega, was initially released to negative reviews.

The critical response has left it at a 4.9/10 critical consensus score on Rotten Tomatoes, with famous film journalists like Roger Ebert giving the movie only one star out of a possible four.

He said the film was: “A confusing cauldron in which there is great activity but little progress, and a lot of hysterical shrieking.”

It was only with the strength of VHS and DVD sales that the film began to gain a cult following.

This resurgence brought it up to the status it’s at today with record-breaking showings averaging 8.2million viewers when airing on the 13 Nights of Halloween block on Freeform.

The film grew to be so popular that the Magic Kingdom even introduced the Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular in the 2015 Halloween Party.

It featured the sisters summoning Disney villains from all over the park to join the party.

With no confirmed date yet, Hocus Pocus 2 will be coming to Disney+ in 2022.
