Holby City stars who found major fame – from Jodie Comer to Michael Fassbender

Holby City will be coming to an end in March 2022, after 23 years on our screens, it was confirmed today (June 2).

And while the likes of Rosie Marcel, David Ames and Bob Barrett have become household names after their years on the show, other former guest stars have gone on to achieve global success.

A number of British celebrities like Lee Ryan, Anthony Costa, Paul O’Grady, Helen Flanagan and even comedian Romesh Ranganathan have made appearances over the years.

But there are some huge names who had small guest stints on the BBC medical drama before their careers completely sky-rocketed.

To mourn the impending loss of Holby – and to celebrate its greatness – Daily Star is taking a look back at some of the famous faces you might not have realised were on the show.

Jodie Comer

British star Jodie Comer is most recognisable around the globe for her portrayal of sneaky Villanelle in the smash hit series Killing Eve.

Before rising to superstardom, she had her start on a number of shows over here, including Doctor Foster, My Mad Fat Diary – and Holby City.

The 28-year-old had her second ever television role in Holby back in 2010, playing a character called Ellie Jenkins.

Poor Ellie had been “puking non-stop for the past couple of weeks… at least four or five times a day”.

And it seems her portrayal of a poorly patient scored her some points, as just years later she was a major player in the industry.

Letitia Wright

Letitia Wright is one of the most promising talents in Hollywood right now, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2018 flick Black Panther as Shuri.

The 27-year-old got her first acting role in Holby City back in 2011 though, appearing as character Ellie Maynard in two episodes.

Her character was facing a dangerous operation, and her chances of survival were seriously low.

But it was clear her career wasn’t in danger, and she went on to star in the likes of Top Boy, Cucumber and Humans.

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender has made his name in recent years in a series of major Hollywood films, like the X-Men franchise and Inglorious Basterds.

But almost 20 years ago, in 2002, the 44-year-old Hollywood hunk starred in Holby City as Christian Connolly in an episode called Ghosts.

His character was in the hospital to have his spleen removed – and he actually confessed he fell asleep while filming the scenes as he was “lying there with [his] eyes closed”.

Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult is one of the UK’s best success stories in Hollywood – though he had a good career start in About a Boy back in 2002.

A year before, he played a character called Oscar Banks in an episode of Holby City – and he even had a guest stint on its sister show Casualty in 1996.

The 31-year-old now stars alongside fellow former Holby star Michael Fassbender in the X-Men franchise and other Hollywood blockbusters like Tolkien.

Sheridan Smith

While not necessarily a global personality, Sheridan Smith is certainly the darling of British television, having made her name on shows such as Gavin and Stacey and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

The 39-year-old multi-talented star appeared in six episodes of Holby City back in 2001 as the character Miranda Locke.

Miranda became obsessed with Victoria Merrick, played by Lisa Faulkner, who was killed off just a few episodes later.

Police were interested in Miranda, but it was later revealed that an angry father had killed her, blaming her for the death of his daughter.

In recent years, Sheridan has been a regular face on television and stage, and even fronted her own documentary.
