Holly Willoughby agrees with Palace probe into Meghan Markle bullying claims

Holly Willoughby got slightly heated over the latest developments on the Meghan Markle bullying claims on This Morning today, saying she thought Buckingham Palace’s decision to investigate was what “any responsible employer would do”.

The ITV daytime show began with a debate with guests Andrew Neil and Beverly Tanner to discuss the news that Buckingham Palace would be investigating the claims from some of Meghan Markle’s former aides in 2018.

“They have gone against tradition I’m really surprised they would take them on,” Beverly said.

“All they’ve done is taken them down to their level,” which prompted an alternative view from the presenter.

Cutting in, Holly, 40, asked: “Have they taken them on though or have they done what any other employer would have to do if an issue of bullying was raised?

Her voice rising and her tone heated, Holly continued: “Presumably it would look really bad if it wasn’t raised. I don’t believe they’re taking them on in that sense… they have to, as a business as such.

“You have to investigate a claim that’s so serious as that don’t you Andrew?” she finished ranting.

Nodding briefly, the journalist said conversely: “I have to agree the Palace is playing into their agenda here.”

Beverly Tanner said she was surprised that the Palace had chosen to take on Meghan and Harry

The guest noted that Meghan and Harry’s publicity is merely a moment in time and won’t last long, but claimed the Palace’s decision to give them further airtime and media headlines is simply what the royal couple want.

“As time goes on their relevance will be in decline,” he went on. “You can only do Oprah once really and get the big bucks.”

Andrew laughed as he reminded the show’s hosts he “took on” the royal family himself years ago.

“I had a double whammy with them and Margaret Thatcher,” he giggled, as Holly exclaimed: “You like a quiet life!”

“The dogs of war at 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace were unleashed on me. They have such power and reach, it’s not an easy thing to do,” the guest offered.

During the discussion Andrew also noted that it must be a great “relief” to both CBS and ITV that Prince Philip’s health is said to be improving, as it would have been “impossible” to show the Oprah Winfrey interview on Sunday and Monday night respectively otherwise.

In a short statement released on Thursday morning, Buckingham Palace confirmed the 99-year-old Duke underwent successful heart surgery this week.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
