Hollywood legend Cara Williams best known from ‘The Defiant Ones’ and ‘Pete and Gladys’ has died.
The actresses died on Thursday at the age of 96 which was confirmed on social media by her great-nephew, Richard Potter.
He penned: “My Great Aunt, who might have been the last surviving Golden Age of Hollywood actress died on Thursday at 96.”
The legendary actresses daughter Justine Jagoda has revealed her mother died of a heart attack at her home in Beverly Hills.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: “My mom was a loving soul, she would take you in her arms and always help you.”
Jagoda also told Variety: “Not only was she a sparkling actress with impeccable comedic timing, she was also funny, over-the-top, warm-hearted and loving.
“She could make anyone laugh and smile if they had a bad day. She was everything that you could wish for in a mother and more. It’s a sad loss to lose a woman from this incredible era.”
Cara’s was born Bernice Kamiat in Brooklyn, New York in 1925 and was one of few left from Hollywood’s Golden Age which was an era between 1910-1960.
The Hollywood actress enjoyed a career which lasted over four decades from 1941 to 1982.
Cara appeared regularly in TV shows and musicals in the 1950s including The Girl Next Door and The Great Diamond Robbery. She also starred alongside Audrey Hepburn in a comedy called Monte Carlo Baby.
She decided to take time out of acting when she married John Drew Barrymore and had a son, John Blyth Barrymore in 1954.
Cara was later nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Academy Award in 1958 for her most famous performance in The Defiant Ones where she played Billy’s mother.
In The Defiant Ones she starred alongside Sidney Poitier who describer her as “a complete original.
“There’s nobody like her. She’s a very sexy girl, but she’s also like a man. I’ll tell you what she’s like: She’s like having a best friend you’d like to kiss.”
During the 1960s, Cara appeared in her own CBS sitcom, The Cara Williams Show and in shows such as Theatre of Romance, Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Clock.
In her 40-year career, the Hollywood star gained 55 screen credits in both film and TV.
Cara retired in the late 70s in Los Angeles after filming her final movie role in The One Man Jury in 1978.
Following acting Cara started a career in interior design.
She was married three times and was with her last husband Asher Dann a real-estate entrepreneur for over 50 years before he died in 2018.
