Naga Munchetty was so horrified at some of the nation’s spelling mistakes she interrupted a guest in disgust on her BBC Radio 5 Live show.
The 46-year-old – who also hosts BBC Breakfast – had welcomed spelling expert Stephen Linstead onto the show to discuss the International Congress of Spelling’s call for a new way of spelling.
It comes after new research found that many children finish school without adequate spelling because many words are not phonetic.
Stephen used an example of a problem word with “enough”.
But Naga quickly interrupted him, asking: “Sorry, Stephen, how is enough going to be spelt?”

He explained it would probably be spelt “e-n-u-f-f”, much to Naga’s horror.
“Oh no,” she gasped. “Oh no! This is what I feared. It just looks wrong.
“It reminds me of something that I’d see graffitied on a wall.
“Which is fine – but why change it if it works for so many people who know how these things are spelt?”

Stephen responded by saying the system doesn’t actually work as there are “so many spellings” that people stumble over.
“Probably about a third of words are unpredictable in some ways,” he continued.
“You can argue about individual words but the fact of the matter is that our school kids do take considerably longer to learn spelling than in other countries.

“So there’s at least a case for making English spelling a little more predictable.”
It comes after Naga was shut down by Carol Kirkwood over her cheeky “pig” jibe on BBC Breakfast.
She was also jokingly branded a “bad one” after ordering a reporter to cause chaos at a pub.
On BBC Breakfast today, Naga’s colleague Dan Walker was left speechless after Carol snubbed him in an awkward gaffe.
