It might have happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but it’s been more than four decades since Star Wars became a cinematic phenomenon.
Episode IV – A New Hope was a global box office smash on its release in 1977, instantly making Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi the galaxy’s best-loved heroes.
Often considered one of the greatest films ever made, writer and director George Lucas’s vision to bring his weird and wonderful alien characters to life was a masterstroke.
But while the good versus evil plot and futuristic space battles were innovative, influential and inspirational at the time, the ever-popular franchise has also given us some serious hotties along the way.
To mark Star Wars day today, May 4, we break down the best and most beautiful characters in the Star Wars galaxy.
Padme Amidala
Let’s be honest here, it’s not exactly difficult to make Natalie Portman look beautiful.
However, her striking looks were perfectly matched to some of the dazzling outfits she wore as Anakin Skywalker’s love interest Padme Amidala in Attack of the Clones.
From the racy gladiator getups and wedding gowns to elegant royal pyjamas and even a formal dinner dress any dominatrix would be proud of, the former Queen of Naboo certainly raised more than a few eyebrows before her untimely death.
Princess Leia
Like a fine wine, Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan got better with every eagerly-anticipated instalment.
From feisty-yet-cute damsel in distress and military leader to gold bikini-clad vixen, Leia went on to become one of the most desired women in the universe.
So much so that, more than a decade later, hit 90s sitcom Friends lovingly recreated the bikini scene when Rachel Green – played by Jennifer Aniston – donned the famous costume to seduce boyfriend Ross Geller.
The episode was even named ‘The One with the Princess Leia Fantasy.’
Shmi Skywalker
It’s hard to leave the mum of the infamous Anakin Skywalker out.
Despite giving birth to the boy that later became Darth Vader, Shmi Skywalker had captivating beauty.
Brave and resilient with looks to match, she also often showed a soft and feminine vulnerability rarely seen in the saga.
Besides, anyone who gives birth to the baddest Jedi in the galaxy deserves a place in our list.
Rey
It’s not only the classics that produced a wealth of onscreen eye candy.
Gorgeous Jedi newcomer Rey, played by English actress Daisy Ridley, first hit our screens in The Force Awakens in 2015.
Originally kitted out in figure-hugging rags, Rey ability with the Force was only matched by her beauty.
Jyn Urso
She might have only appeared in one film, but Jyn Urso’s legacy as Rebel outlaw in Rogue One will not be forgotten in a hurry.
Played by the delectable Felicity Jones, Urso’s mission to find a weakness in the seemingly impenetrable original Death Star made her an immediate babe.
Defiant, doggedly determined and absolutely adorable, Urso may have had a relatively short-lived part, but her legacy as a Star Wars stunner lives on.
Mara Jade Skywalker
While not in any of the films, Mara Jade Skywalker sent pulses racing with her appearance in the spin-off series Dark Force Rising.
Famously married to Luke, she ultimately died in the episode ‘Sacrifices’, but made a fleeting reappearance later in the season.
Blessed with brains, braun and beauty, Mara Jade had the complete package.
