A new documentary about Jimmy Savile, Portrait of a Predator, aired yesterday discussing how the monster manufactured a lifestyle of abusing others and avoiding detection, and has new testimonies from victims and eyewitnesses to his crimes.
But it wasn’t until after the predator’s death that the truth about his heinous crimes truly came to light, despite an investigation by Newsnight regarding his offences in 2011. However, the piece was never aired.
Sicko Savile died on October 29 2011 at his home in Roundhay, two days before his 85th birthday.
He had recently been in hospital with pneumonia and his death was not treated as suspicious.
What did Jimmy Savile do?
Only when a year later, on October 3 2012, journalist Mark Williams-Thomas – a former police detective who was part of the original Newsnight report – presented ITV documentary Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, were accounts of women who had been abused heard and Savile publicly exposed as a paedophile for the first time.
Several women said they had been molested as teens in the 60s and 70s. In 2013, Scotland yard labelled Savile a “prolific, predatory” sex offender, after their investigation unearthed some 214 criminal offences spanning 28 police jurisdictions from 1955 to 2009.
The report published, ‘Giving Victims A Voice’, found that allegations of Savile’s sexual predations spanned 14 medical institutions, where it is believed he used his privilege as a public figure to gain access. Seventy-three percent of all his victims were children.
It is thought he raised over £40 million for charity, much of which went to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he spent many years volunteering.
