Hum drummer Bryan St Pere dies suddenly aged 52 as fans pay tribute

Musician Bryan St Pere – famous for his time in the band Hum – has died at the age of 52.

The percussionist’s death was announced by the rock band on Thursday, after his fellow Hum members Jeff Deimpsy, Matt Talbott and Tim Lash shared their heartbreak at the news.

Whilst the cause of his death isn’t yet confirmed, Hum’s statement revealed he passed away ‘suddenly’.

A statement from the band reads: “It is with very heavy hearts and tear filled eyes that we share the news that our beloved friend and bandmate, Bryan St. Pere, has passed away.”

“We are devastated and deeply saddened by his sudden, and unexpected passing. Bryan was a dear friend, a loving father, brother, and was an incredible person and musician.

“We all feel extremely lucky to have shared time and space with him.”

The statement later added: “Peace and love to all who knew Bryan, and those he touched. We will miss him dearly.”

Fans also flocked to pay emotional tributes on social media, and PJ Sykes wrote on Twitter: “HUM is one of those bands that I think all my musician friends love. Their records are often a reference when it’s time to record guitars, but the real secret sauce is that DRUM sound. Rest in Power Bryan St. Pere.”

A second Twitter user commented: “This one hurts a lot. RIP Bryan St. Pere. I don’t think I ever truly appreciated drumming until I started listening to Hum. He could do so much with so little. Thanks for everything.”

A third wrote: “Ah, RIP to the drummer of my favourite band.”

And a fourth commented: “

Bryan joined the Champagne, Illnois-based band in 1990 and played on all five of the band’s albums – including their most famous release which was Stars in 1995.

Despite not joining his bandmates for their reunion tour in 2015, Bryan reprised his drumming duties on their 2020 album titled Inlet, which saw Hum’s first studio album in two decades.

St Pere took over from Hum’s original drummer Jeff Kropp one year after the band started, and he was reportedly invited to join the band after the other members heard him playing the impressive drum fills in Rush songs from his window.

Discussing his love for music and the drums which began in his early years, St Pere spoke to The Trap Set podcast – and explained he was inspired by the band Rush.

He said: “It’s like the only band I listened to for two years, maybe three years. Like, eighth grade, sophomore year of high school, it was all Rush.”
