Idris Elba backs Meghan Markle's decision to 'speak up' after being 'silenced'

Luther star Idris Elba has stood by his chum Meghan Markle for “speaking out” after she claimed she’d been “silenced” by the Royal family following her marriage to Prince Harry.

The Suits actress landed the comment as part of the tell-all Oprah Winfrey interview that divided the world.

In 2018, the 48-year-old Netflix star was a guest at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess and also DJ’d at their reception too.

During a promotion for his new film – Concrete Cowboy which will be unleashed by the steaming giant – Idris was asked his view of Meghan stepping out to speak her own truth.

Entertainment Tonight asked Idris: “We have seen in real life your friend Meghan Markle telling her story of the black experience – what do you think about her courage, just stepping out and saying ‘I need to speak my truth’?”

It was clear from the Wire star’s response that he felt Meghan had been backed into a corner and was given no other option but to vocalise her point.

He said: “I will say that everyone has to have their opportunity to speak up about what they feel.

“You cannot take someone’s voice away, that’s what we have to communicate.”

Earlier this month, the soon-to-be mum-of-two took part in an explosive interview with US chat show host Oprah.

The interview was raw and certainly left the Royal Family needing to answer questions after Meghan claimed she had reached out for help during a mental health break down and received no support.

In the same interview, she also alleged that her passport and credit cards were taken from her, leaving her with virtually no freedom.

It was also heard that Meghan had wanted to join Oprah for a televised discussion prior to her wedding but that particular request had been denied by officials at the palace.

Wanting to get to the bottom of it all, Oprah asked: “Were you silent, or were you silenced?”

To which Meghan chirped back: “The latter.”

She went on: “Everyone in my world was given a very clear directive from the moment the world knew Harry and I were dating to always say ‘no comment’.

“So that’s my friends, my mom and dad. And we did. I did anything they told me to do. Of course I did. Because it was also throughout the lens of ‘and we’ll protect you.'”
