I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! fans have praised Danny Miller for opening up about how it was for him to play a gay character for 13 years.

The Emmerdale star took on the role of the shy and reserved Aaron Livesy back in 2008 where he his character gradually came out as gay.

Adam Woodyatt and Danny Miller discussed what it was like to work on some of the most loved soaps on TV.

It was at this point that fellow campmate Frankie Bridge quizzed him on what it was like to play the role of a gay character as a straight man.

While he reflected on his vast TV career, he confessed that it was amazing for him to be able to break down the stigma behind homosexuality.

Frankie bluntly asked: “Danny, was your character always gay or was there a coming out [scene]?”

To which he explained: “He [Aaron] was in there as straight and he said he was just a virgin and was nervous around girls.

“Then this new producer took over, he was the one who made my career really.”

He added: “They asked me to come up for a meeting at the end of the day to discuss the part so I was nervous.

“I don’t know what day it was but it was worrying, and I thought, ‘Are they gong to get rid of me?’ and ‘Why is it at the end of the day?’.

“They went, ‘We’ve come up with this reason, this storyline that we want to do with you.

“We think it’s the reason why he’s so angry and he’s nervous around girls and why he’s a virgin and we think it’s because he’s gay. ”

When Danny was first approached with this idea, he confessed he “didn’t even have to think about it” before he agreed to the ground breaking storyline.

“I didn’t even have to think about it, I just said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to be able to portray something that’s not really been done in soap.

“Obviously, there’s been loads of gay character’s in soaps but in terms of someone against all stereotypes of a gay man who’s just hard and gay was the reason that they thought I’d be so good at it.”

As he revealed how rewarding it was to take on such a powerful role, fans couldn’t help but praise the star online.

One viewer looked back on the iconic storyline with fondness and penned: “I watched that storyline Danny did and I’ve carried on watching Emmerdale ever since. So thanks Danny.”

Another agreed: “I always remember when Danny first came into Emmerdale, it was an amazing storyline.”

A third added: “Danny talking about Aaron’s sexuality storyline is so important and it has helped so many people.”

Elsewhere, another fan of the show chimed in with: “Danny for Prime Minister please!”
