Gillian McKeith isn’t the first or only campmate to have broken I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! rules during her jungle stint, but she was certainly one of the most iconic.
Wary of bland food after days with no stars from Bushtucker Trials, Gillian decided to rectify the problem for her fellow jungle buddies by sneaking in herbs and spices…. in her knickers.
But despite that, she still insists the food “wasn’t an issue” for her.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, she explained: “Obviously the food wasn’t an issue for me, the rice and beans, because I like rice and beans!
“But there was never enough food, so you were always starving, and obviously that was by intention. It was just a constant gnawing hunger that I’ve never felt in my life, ever, that was just always there.
“It was constant, almost like a pain in your stomach. So most of the time you felt weak, light-headed, dizzy and you just couldn’t stop obsessing about food,” she added.
But to add a bit of flavour to the paltry jungle diet, Gillian admitted: “As we all know by now, I smuggled in dozens of culinary herbs and salts in specially designed knickers with pockets sewn into them.
“So when I was still in possession of the secret goods, the taste of the rice and the beans was definitely improved while I was in charge of the seasoning part of the meals.”
She went on to explain: “It’s definitely a good idea. For me, I can tolerate bland, but I was really thinking of the others and I thought they won’t be able to, so I will bring in as much seasoning as I possibly can.
“So I got these specially designed knickers. I bought the knickers from Marks & Spencers, and then I went to a dressmaker and I designed all these secret pockets all over the knickers, inside and out!
“I had a lot of stuff in there, it was very heavy. The good thing about it was I looked like I had a very perky bottom!” she quipped.
But the food wasn’t all bad, Gillian admits.
She said: “There was an amazing food that I did win in a trial one time called a Black Sapote, and when you open it up it literally looks like chocolate pudding.
“That was the best thing that I won in the whole thing, and it was not fattening – not that you worry about that in there because you lose weight – but it’s an amazing fruit and a really good source of Vitamin C it was absolutely delicious.”
