Ioan Gruffudd and his wife Alice Evans split due to irreconcilable differences, their divorce papers revealed.
The document was filed in Los Angeles and also claims the couple broke up on New Year’s Day, over two months ago.
The papers state they are in a “collaborative process” to resolve all spousal support issues and are seeking joint custody of their two daughters, Ella, 11, and Elsie, seven.
This comes after Alice, 49, said she was blindsided by the 47-year-old Hollywood actor’s decision.
She shared the news story on Instagram, captioning it: “Oh, ok. Thanks for letting me know I guess.”
In a since deleted tweet the actress broke the news that Ioan had walked out of the family because “he no longer loves me”.
She tweeted: “Sad news. My beloved husband/soulmate of 20 years, Ioan Gruffudd, has announced he is to leave his family, starting next week.
“Me and our young daughters are very confused and sad. We haven’t been given a reason except that he ‘no longer loves me’. I’m so sorry.”
The couple have been married 13 years, after meeting on the set of Disney’s 102 Dalmatians.
They became engaged on New Year’s Day 2006, exactly 14 years before they would one day split up.
Last week Alice wrote that she was “scared” of Ioan’s reaction and that he was “always angry”.

Speaking on the separation, Ioan said: “Look, as I said before, it’s an extremely difficult time for the family.
“Our thoughts are with our children obviously right now and I’d really respect a little bit of privacy right now, thank you.”
Ioan is best known for starring in the Fantastic Four movies and playing a serial rapist in ITV drama Liar.
Alice Evans most recently had TV parts in CSI: Miami, The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off show The Originals.
