Singer Jesy Nelson has been accused again of “blackfishing” after an awkward outfit blunder which made her look like she was mocking the claims against her.
The former Little Mix singer shared snaps of her in an orange jacket which had a logo written across it which read Market Black.
The 30-year-old star was forced to delete her Instagram post following the controversial outfit choice.
Jesy was performing at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard at London’s O2 Arena and was snapped on the red carpet before the event with her hair covering the word ‘Market’.
The star faced more accusations that she was taking a dig at the claims made against her that she was blackfishing.
Blackfishing is when a person appears to emulate a black or mixed-race person by using hair, make-up, clothes, phrases pioneered by black people, or tanning skin darker. The term was coined two years ago on social media to highlight white people using styles as a commodity and reducing black culture to particular traits.
In October, Jesy released her solo single Boyz featuring Nicki Minaj but caused a row with former bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock because of the video.
The singer is said to be upset over fans taking a swipe at her again.
One fan who saw the outfit was enraged and said: “Jesy Nelson and her entire team are just trolling and mocking black women now. And it reeks of ignorance, arrogance, desperation and misogynoir.”
A source told The Sun that Jesy was told minutes before performing on stage.
They said: “She had no idea, when her hair was pulled over one shoulder on the red carpet, that it was covering the start of the logo.
“Her team didn’t say a word when it was happening and even posted the picture on Instagram before deleting it a few minutes later.”
Jesy was described as being “so upset” by the red carpet snaps and is said that the negative comments brought a “huge dark cloud” over her performance.
Friends close to the singer are said to be “furious” by the incident especially because Jesy has been made to “look like a fool again.”
The Daily Star has approached Jesy’s representatives for comment.
