Kate Garraway faces having to quit GMB to care for husband Derek Draper

In a documentary airing tonight, Kate Garraway discusses her husband Derek Draper’s ongoing battle with Covid-19 – and reveals she might have to quit Good Morning Britain to care for him.

The presenter, 53, opens up about the couple’s painful ordeal in Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, which airs on ITV on Tuesday night.

She speaks with her children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, about making their North London home wheelchair-friendly for Derek.

“If I have to give up work to care for him it’s best to do it now,” Kate said. “If he needs 24-hour care, I’ll be the primary carer.

“I’ve a fear of the reality. We’ll have to fall in love again a bit.”

Derek, also 53, remains in hospital after catching the virus a year ago and suffering from heart failure.

The couple have been married for 16 years.

Kate revealed in the documentary that she’d talk with Derek on her iPad for hours during the night before having to head off to work at GMB.

When she finally had to go on air, she’d ask Derek’s nurses to put the show on so he could see her face while they couldn’t talk.

She told The Mirror: “And in the end I said to him, ‘Just stay with me, I’m going to keep talking to you’. And he was obviously exhausted. Because that’s the other thing, the tiniest thing completely exhausts him.

“And then he’s sort of done and I was like, ‘Close your eyes, I’m still here, I’m not going to go anywhere, I’m going to stay on the line’.

“So I kept the iPad going all the way into Good Morning Britain. And I said, ‘Right, I’m going to go on air now, and I’m going to ask the nurses to put Good Morning Britain on, so you can still see me and then I’ll call you straight afterwards’. It was a very strange, very strange morning.”

The Mirror reported documentary viewers could hear Derek saying: “Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.

“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it.”

Kate replies: “As in die?”

He tearfully responds: “Yes… I don’t know how to cope. I don’t know how to cope.”
