Kate Garraway made an emotional appearance on Good Morning Britain today to talk about her new documentary which airs on ITV this evening.
Talking to GMB Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid on Tuesday morning, Kate opened up about the heartbreaking past 12 months which have seen her desperately trying to balance work, her family life with two children with the fact her husband Derek Draper was fighting for his life in hosptial.
Derek was taken by ambulance to hospital in March 2020 after contracting coronavirus.
Shortly after he was placed in a medically induced coma by medics to give him the best chance to beat the virus.
Late summer last year Kate agreed to film the documentary in order to help others who have also been through challenging times and heartbreak due to the pandemic.
Kate explained: “The first thing i want to say is that the morning we are hearing so many stories of people who have lost vile.
“I know I am very lucky Derek is still here. We do still have the chance to battle on.
“We are all battling through in different ways. But it is still making sure that the people who have been very ill are not forgotten.”
Revealing why she did the documentary, Kate said: “There were many many months before I went back to GMB where I was locked in that bubble due to the restrictions and that was a very private time.
“When I came back to work I was amazed and moved by people’s reactions and people said I was talking about long term situations they are facing.
“I thought this story needs to be told as I have a chance to tell it and they don’t.
“The footage was first meant for me. Then we got an iPad into the hospital.
‘We started recording to it. It was so emotional and it was all I could do so I wouldn’t fall apart.”
In a documentary special set to air on Tuesday, Kate will detail the difficult journey she has been on since Derek was hospitalised in March 2020.
Kate Garraway: Finding Derek was filmed last summer – with Kate recently telling Susanna Reid that she had hoped Derek would be back home by the time it aired.
The harrowing FaceTime call will be aired in the documentary.
During the video call, Derek says: “Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.
“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it.”
The ITV regular replies: “As in die?”
Looking tearful Derek then confirms: “Yes… I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”
While Derek is now free from Covid-19, the virus has wreaked havoc on his internal organs.
It’s understood that his kidneys have failed and he has suffered serious damage to his liver and his pancreas.
On top of that, he also is said to have ‘holes is in his heart’.
