Kate Garraway has offered an emotional update on her husband Derek Draper’s condition at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards.
Taking to the stage to present the award for Best Nurse, Good Morning Britain star Kate, 54, thanked all the healthcare heroes in her poignant speech.
Host of the Channel 4 awards ceremony Davina McCall enquired about Derek, who has been suffering the effects of Covid-19 since March last year, and following a lengthy hospital stint.
Davina asked: “Kate, I would love to ask on behalf of all of us – how is Derek doing?”
A clearly emotional Kate replied: “He’s had a good day today. We did some exercises together before I came out.
“A day at a time, but today’s a good day. Thank you for asking, that’s really kind of you,” she added to Davina.
Kate then delved into a moving tribute to the nurses who have gone above and beyond during the coronavirus pandemic, as she began: “I’m here to talk about nurses.
“I mean, where do you begin, there is absolutely no doubt that everything nurses do every day is utterly breath-taking.
“But sometimes it’s the little moments of thoughtfulness that make all the difference and it’s one of those that’s lead to tonight’s recipient being nominated.”
The winner of the award will be formally revealed on Channel 4 during the awards ceremony at 7:30pm Sunday night.
The star-studded ceremony, held by The Sun, took place on Tuesday.
Celebrities in attendance included David Beckham, Rod Stewart, the Duke of Cambridge Prince William and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Among those presenting emotional tributes to NHS and other healthcare staff was music mogul Simon Cowell, who said in a video filmed for the awards ceremony: “Every one of us would love to thank the health care heroes in the world today. After what they’ve gone through in the last 24 months, thank you is an understatement.”
England football manager Gareth Southgate added: “On behalf of the England team I just want to say thank you to all our health care heroes. It’s amazing it took a pandemic for us to realise exactly what you do, but I think we knew it anyway really.”
While comedian Mo Gilligan commented: “Thank you so much for all the hard work you have done for the past 18 months and you continue to do. Without you, a lot of the stuff would not be possible, so big up yourself 10 times, 20 times, 50,000 times.”
The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards air tonight at 7.30pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
