Kate Garraway 'not coping' after being told Derek 'may never wake from coma'

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has opened up about her struggles as her husband Derek Draper remains seriously ill in hospital after falling ill with Covid.

Kate, 53, is releasing a book documenting her daily struggles, and is also set to present an ITV documentary about families coping with Covid during the pandemic.

The mum-of-two spoke about the book with Good Housekeeping, and has admitted that she is finding it hard to keep it all together while her husband is still ill.

She told the publication: “I’m not sure I am coping. I honestly don’t know how single mums do it; it’s just so hard.

“A lot of the time I find myself thinking, ‘What would Derek say?’ and ‘What would Derek do?'”

She added: “I’m lucky that I’m being supported by lots of friends, too, and Ranvir has been really helpful because she’s been operating as a single mum since her son, Tushaan, was very little.

“I asked her, ‘How do you do it?’ and she said, ‘You just have to accept that you can’t do everything.'”

Kate also admitted that her husband’s future remains uncertain, and whilst she’s hoping that he is improving, she added: “It’s very much two steps forward, three steps back.”

This comes after her GMB co-star Piers Morgan spoke about her plight on the show last week, saying: “We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek is still in a coma from COVID. He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this, and it’s heartbreaking.

“It has hit right here on our show… It’s hit a lot of people now. 100,000 people or more have now lost their lives – think about how many family members they all have. Multiply that and you’re getting into millions of people directly affected by COVID-19.

“We’ve got to take this seriously and we’ve got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That’s the only way through this.”

Whilst Derek has technically woken up from his coma, which he was placed in last year to aid his recovery, he remains in a minimum state of consciousness.

Kate and Derek share children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, together after marrying in 2005.
