Kate Garraway prepares for 'bittersweet' wedding anniversary with hubby Derek Draper

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway is said to be getting ready for a ‘bittersweet’ wedding anniversary with her husband Derek Draper.

Derek has been gradually recovering from Covid-19 since March last year, when he was struck down with the virus and left in hospital for more than a year suffering Long Covid symptoms.

It will be the couple’s 16th anniversary on September 10, after the pair wed in a sweet ceremony back in 2005.

Now, with Derek requiring round-the-clock care and struggling to walk without the aid of a wheelchair, their anniversary celebrations will likely be quite different to normal.

Kate’s best friend and fellow TV presenter Clare Nasir has opened up about Kate’s tentative plans in a brand new interview this week.

Speaking to Closer magazine, Clare said: “Kate lives day to day with Derek because she doesn’t know what’s going to happen in 24 hours, let alone further along than that.

“I’m sure she’s got things she’d want to do, but she doesn’t want to tempt fate. That’s why her anniversary will be so bittersweet – planning is so hard.”

Clare continued: “She lives everyday as it comes because something unexpected could happen at any moment with Derek’s condition.”

Earlier this year, Clare revealed that Derek’s heart had stopped beating “on various occasions”, and Kate was warned by doctors at the time that he would likely die.

Heartbreakingly, Kate was even called and told that her husband may already have passed away – before staff phoned her back and told her he hadn’t.

Kate married Derek just a year after they started dating, exchanging vows at a low-key ceremony with Kate stunning in a Caroline Castigliano wedding dress.

In a sweet twist, Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole was invited to the wedding, with Kate admitting to The Times in November last year: “Hilariously, Brendan Cole was at the wedding, years before I did Strictly Come Dancing.

“I assumed he was someone’s boyfriend, but Derek had secretly been having dancing lessons with him.

“Derek is like that: when he wants to learn something, he studies it until he can do it perfectly.”

Kate and Derek were set to renew their vows last year after 15 years of marriage – but Derek’s coronavirus battle meant that didn’t go ahead.

The couple’s 15-year-old daughter Darcey was due to be the wedding planner for the ceremony.

Derek and Kate share two children – Darcey and William, 12.
