Kate Garraway fought back tears on Thursday’s edition of Good Morning Britain as she gave an update on her husband Derek Draper’s recovery from coronavirus.
The 53-year-old presenter was on hand to present the news bulletin on the ITV breakfast show alongside hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
Piers, 55, and Susanna, 50, asked Kate how she’s doing as Derek remains in hospital after contracting Covid-19 in March last year.
Kate became extremely emotional as she chatted to her colleagues about her husband.
She said: “Derek is still ravaged by the effects of Covid way back in March, his recovery is incredibly uncertain.”
“I’m trying to look for new things and new ways and talking to doctors about what we can do for him.
“Meanwhile, people are still dying in extraordinary numbers, people that aren’t older, that haven’t got underlying conditions and it is just unbearable.
“People like you Piers and you Susanna say all the time, ‘You’re an inspiration to keep going’. I don’t think that I am.”
Former I’m a Celebrity contestant Kate admitted that she’s been feeling low recently after receiving some sad news.
She said: “It’s been a strange time. I’ve been a bit low since Christmas, physically low
“I felt slightly, physically at the end of my tether and kind of had to regroup a bit.
“This week, a friend of mine’s mother-in-law, who was 51, so younger than me died from Covid.”
Kate continued: “She got it at Christmas – it’s making me feel emotional,” Kate said as she was seen trying to fight back the tears.
“And she just went down very quickly and she died. I just thought, ‘I cannot believe that here we are, so far on.'”
Kate took to Instagram on Wednesday to announced that she’s releasing a book later this year about her ordeal over the past year.
Discussing her new project, Kate said: “If I can tell my story and some of the people who have helped me then maybe that will be helpful for others.
“I am really hoping that it will help you with all that you are going through. You can pre-order your copy of The Power of Hope from Amazon.”
Both Susanna and Piers praised their pal and co-star for putting pen to paper and sharing her story with the world.
Derek, 53, is still in hospital after Covid-19 made him lose eight stone, develop diabetes and suffer holes in his lungs and heart.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
