Kate Garraway says she's '24-hour carer' as she updates on Derek Draper Covid battle

Kate Garraway was left speechless when she bagged the Best Authored Documentary award at this year’s National Television Awards.

The Good Morning Britain anchor looked as though she was going to cry as she was greeted with a standing ovation from the star-studded audience.

Her documentary, Finding Derek, offered a candid insight into her family life while her husband, former political adviser Derek Draper, spent a year in hospital being treated for coronavirus, where he was admitted to intensive care.

Dedicating her award to her husband, she said: “You should be here and should have had the chance to tell your own story. Derek, you’re going to get the chance – believe, the hope is real!”

Speaking to Daily Star and other press after she picked up her gong, she told us: “There’s a lot of challenges that we are facing now. I am now experiencing what it’s like to be like a 24-hour carer and challenges that are there.

“We all know social care has been in the headlines, lots of people need help getting health and social care that they need, [there are] definitely more stories to tell.

“Let’s hope Derek’s voice will be in the stories, we know he’s in there we just need to get him out.”

Discussing attending the awards show, Kate went on to tell Daily Star: “I wasn’t sure if I was going to come.

“I love the NTAs but it felt a strange time to be leaving the family and I’ve been feeling quite sad with the situation with Derek.

“Even coming in here, I met a woman who said I lost my husband and it makes me think it was worth it coming.”

Kate went on to explain: “The kids are in the room with Derek, they’ve got a weird contraption with the TV so I hope they haven’t pulled a plug out for it.”

On stage, Kate thanked those who voted, saying: “It was a hugely brave decision of ITV to commission this, they didn’t really know what they were making.

“A story about bereavement and triumph. In the end, really, it ended up being something between the two.”

The journalist continued: “Thank you so much for voting, I wonder if the reason why you did is because our story is your story. I think we’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it’s livelihood or mental health.

“I just want to say to all the Darcey’s and Billy’s and Derek’s and Derek’s families, whatever you’re going through, you’re not forgotten. We want the joy back, we want it to be over but the fight goes on.

“But most of all Derek, you should be here and should have had the chance to tell your own story. Derek, you’re going to get the chance – believe! The hope is real! Thank you so much.”
